What Are Mild Sausages?
If you’re new to the world of sausages and trying to decide whether or not mild Italian sausage links are the ones for you, you might be wondering what the distinction is between hot, sweet and mild sausages. As you might expect, the difference between hot and mild Italian sausage has to do with spice.
Mild real Italian sausage contains a mix of spices, like fennel or parsley, but no red pepper flakes. It’s hot sausages that have the red pepper flakes. The difference between mild-flavored Italian sausage and sweet Italian sausage is that sweet Italian sausage has sweet basil in its spice mix. You can combine sweet and mild Italian sausage to get the right mix of sweetness without overpowering your sausage dish.
Mild Italian sausage is a good choice for those who don’t tolerate hot spices well. Premio mild Italian sausage has plenty of flavor, but you don’t have to worry about some of the stomach upset or mouth burn that may come if you are sensitive to hot spices. While we think you can enjoy any of our delicious Premio Italian sausages at any time, you may prefer mild Italian sausage links as part of a breakfast meal, when you want something gentler on your stomach, and other types of Italian sausage later in the day, for lunch or dinner.
If you’re preparing Premio Italian sausages for the whole family, the kids might prefer the mild and sweet sausages to the spicier variants.
Cheesy Mild Italian Sausage Breakfast Casserole
If you don’t mind making breakfast the night before, here’s a recipe for a cheesy sausage breakfast casserole that your kids are sure to love!
You’ll need a pound of Premio Sweet/Mild Italian Sausage, 12 large eggs, a tablespoon of vegetable oil, two and a half cups of whole milk, two teaspoons of ground mustard, a teaspoon of kosher salt, half a teaspoon of ground black pepper, six ounces of ¾-inch cubed sourdough bread, three-quarters of a cup of shredded sharp cheddar and three-quarters of a cup shredded Monterey jack.
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, then throw in your Premio Mild Italian Sausage. Use a wooden spoon to break the sausage into smaller pieces. When it starts to brown, after about ten minutes, remove from heat and give it ten minutes to cool.
Whisk the eggs in a large bowl and toss in the milk, mustard, salt and pepper, whisking it all together. Now combine everything — sausage, bread, cheeses and egg mixture — and stir it all up. Pour it into a 9” by 13” baking dish, spread it out evenly, cover with plastic wrap or foil and put it in the refrigerator.
The next morning, take out the casserole. Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Uncover the casserole and put it in the middle rack for 45 to 55 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when you can put a toothpick in the middle and it comes out clean. Take it out, let it cool for ten minutes and you’ve got a hot, delicious, cheesy sausage breakfast that’s perfect for the whole family!
You’ll get the best results from your Premio Sweet and Mild Italian sausage if you cook them to perfection. Here’s our recommendation for fully cooking your sweet and mild Italian sausage links:
