Ingredients:
2 green bell peppers, chopped1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomato
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
8 (6-7 inch) hero rolls
- Always cook pork sausage to a minimum internal temperature of 160° F using a meat thermometer.
- Always cook chicken sausage to a minimum internal temperature of 165° F using a meat thermometer.
How to make Game-Day Tailgating Party Sausage Heroes:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). In a 4-inch deep and 12-inch wide skillet, evenly brown Premio Sausages over low heat, turning frequently to avoid burning. Remove from skillet, set aside and drain.
2. Add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil to skillet with chopped onion and red and green bell peppers. Cook, turning frequently, for about 5-6 minutes. Add can of crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, garlic powder and dried oregano; stir well.
3. Add sausage back to skillet and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes, stirring often (some liquid from the tomato will evaporate and mixture should thicken).
4. Cut open hero rolls without slicing completely through. Take out excess breading in the middle of the roll. In each roll, add 2 tablespoons mozzarella cheese. Place one cooked sausage link and about 3 tablespoons of the cooked tomato/pepper/onion mixture on top.
5. Wrap each hero in aluminum foil and place in baking pan. Bake in preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, until cheese melts and hero is thoroughly heated (Note: If tailgating, place wrapped heroes in a disposable pan to heat. DO NOT place directly on grill).
